What is aeration and how can it help my lawn?
What do you imagine when you picture the ground beneath your lawn? Believe it or not, a healthy yard calls for soil that has small gaps of oxygen running throughout. These pockets are necessary for not only delivering air to the roots of your grass, but nutrients, water, and any treatments administered on the surface. It’s similar to having a healthy head of hair— you shouldn’t just treat the hair itself, but the entire scalp as well!
Aeration methods are an effective way to remove small but substantial ‘plugs’ of soil from your lawn, creating holes for vital nutrients to be delivered deep into your grass and roots. This process also helps to break up compacted soil and thatch areas.
- Increase water intake
- Reduces soil compaction
- Reduces water runoff
- Brakes down thatch
- Improves root zones
- Encourages increased root density
Core Aeration and Over-Seeding for Fescue Lawns:
Fescue lawns have no way to rejuvenate like Bermuda or Zyosia lawns. A thick, healthy Fescue lawn is the key to a weed-free lawn. This is why we recommend the core aeration and over-seeding. Core aeration and over-seeding for Fescue lawns is done in early September through October. This will ensure you the best results in rejuvenating your lawn, as Fescue lawns develop better in cooler temperatures.
What You Need to Know:
- Once seed is placed, it MUST be kept moist for germination to take place.
- Fescue lawns should be core aerated and seeded every year to keep the lawn thick, lush and green through the growing season.
